MCC PhD candidate Harsh Wadhwani has won the Photo Competition organized by the ANION consortium! The consortium “[…] invited members of the ANION community to share visually engaging images that capture the science and creativity behind nano-electrochemistry research,” as stated in their post.

Harsh won the competition with his beautiful image “Macroporous Silver”, which shows macroporous silver synthesized via electrodeposition using PMMA spheres as a template1. This structure functions as a model system with tunable macroporosity, which allows us to study morphological effects on electrochemical performance. This system has been used extensively by our former group member dr. Maaike Vink-van Ittersum, whose PhD thesis can be found here.

Another MCC group member, dr. Hannah Dickinson, was runner-up in the competition with her image “Silver Feathers”. This image shows the dendritic growth of silver during electrodeposition, which Hannah was able to capture in an in-situ electrochemistry experiment in a transmission electron microscope. Hannah’s research focuses on in-situ monitoring and visualising chemical composition, valence state and morphological changes of electrochemical surfaces at the nanoscale during operation.
